The Goodbye

TUESDAY

This is the third time he circles the car. The breeze from the water tapers my simmering rage. I push off the alley wall between the Fisherman’s Market and my warehouse.

“So?” I swallow hard. “What do you think?” He’s had enough time.

“I will give you seven for it.” He stops in front of me.

This is why I hate people. The price is the same I paid only three months ago. “It’s listed for ten.” I might only need five thousand to get a ticket, but the car is worth way more than that. My car. The one that I set out to buy, saved, scrimped and bled for.

“Look...” He takes out an envelope. “Honestly, I have eight thousand dollars of cash only.” He shows me the green notes. “Take it or leave it.”

I wish I had more time to sell the car. Then, I’d tell him to shove his money. Or better yet, just throw the money in the air and say no deal. But he’s the first to reply to the ad I placed this morning. And eight thousand is enough to get the ticket and another car.

“Fine.” I snatch the envelope. “Deal.” I pull out the papers to get this done. He tries to start a conversation, even tries to hit on me. He soon absorbs the disdain directed his way and stops talking altogether. The rest of the exchange is quick and sharp. Just like a stab wound to the heart.

I don’t just see the irony, but I watch it being driven down the street, tyres screeching around the corner until it’s gone.

The first thing I do when inside is pour a stiff drink. There’s a knock at the door. Is it wishful thinking hoping the buyer is back, wanting to hand back my car? The knocking continues in a familiar pattern only Brian does. Talk about timing. Luckily he wasn’t here ten minutes earlier. There’s a lot I haven’t filled him in on. Starting with me selling my car to finance a trip to a Holistic Knight Retreat. Actually, I haven’t even told him about the retreat at all. We keep missing each other and he has been very busy chasing the promotion he needs.

None of that is something I want to do, so I take the drink with me to the door. Sipping, I open it.

“Hey.” Brian’s there, hand resting on the door frame.

I open the door wider. “Howdy, partner.” I lean forward greeting him with a kiss then backing away to let him in.

“Good, you’re starting early.” He nods to my drink. “That’s why I’m here to grab you. We’re all meeting at Joe’s for some drinks.” He nods to the idling car with his partner Max waiting. He sees me and waves. I wave with my drink hand and he beeps for me to hurry.

This got even worse.

“Brian, I don’t think I can tonight, I have heaps of work to do.” I turn back to him. How the hell am I meant to tell him about the trip? I stall a little longer.
